Onyanko Club

Onyanko Club is a pioneering multi-member female Japanese idol group that originated from the Fuji TV variety series "夕やけニャンニャン" (Yuyake Nyan Nyan). Active between 1985 and 1987, the group revolutionized the idol industry by popularizing the multi-member model featuring assigned membership numbers, member rotation through graduation and voting systems—a format later adopted by AKB48 and others.

During their brief existence, Onyanko Club, their sub-groups, and member solo projects released over sixty albums and 130 singles. The collective featured 52 members total, with sixteen pursuing solo careers. Notable solo members include Sonoko Kawai, Marina Watanabe, Shizuka Kudo, Sanae Johnouchi, and Eri Nitta. Three sub-groups also formed: Nyangilas, Ushiroyubi Sasaregumi, and Ushirogami Hikaretai.

The group's music was produced by influential figures including lyricist and AKB48 founder Yasushi Akimoto, former Sadistic Mika Band bassist and producer Tsugutoshi Goto, composers Etsuko Yamakawa and Ken Takahashi, and arranger Jun Sato. Guest composers included Yumi Matsutoya, Mariya Takeuchi, and Taku.

Following the group's dissolution, members pursued diverse paths in entertainment and beyond. Today, Shizuka Kudo and enka singer Sanae Johnouchi remain active recording artists, while others have transitioned to acting, modeling, or behind-the-scenes roles in the Japanese entertainment industry.
