Originally issued as "Joe Morello Sextet" Intro LP ILP 608 later issue as "Art Pepper-Red Norvo Sextet" Score SLP 4031. (Note: Sixth member of the "sextet" was guitarist Howard Roberts who did not participate in the selections featuring Pepper.)
A6 to C3 recorded in Los Angeles, August 1956
Originally issued as "Art Pepper Quintet" Jazz West LP 10, Score SLP 4032. (also on Blue Note CD "The Return Of Art Pepper")
C4, D1, D2, D4 recorded in Los Angeles, December 28, 1956
C5, D3, D6 recorded in Los Angeles, January 14, 1957
Originally issued as "Art Pepper Quartet" Intro ILP 606, Score SLP 4030.
Note that jazzdisco.org and Tom Lord's Jazz Discography have different recording information for some tracks:
A1 to A5 were recorded on January 3, 1957, not 1956. Art Pepper made no recordings between July 1954 and July 1956 as he was in prison.
A6 to C3 were recorded at Capitol Tower, Los Angeles, August 6, 1956
C4, C5, D2, D5, D6, were recorded at Radio Recorders, Los Angeles, on December 28, 1956
D1, D3, D4 recorded at Master Recorders, Los Angeles, January 14, 1957
——Tracklist info——
As mentioned above, this LP is a two-disc Blue Note set that includes the complete tracks from "The Return of Art Pepper" and "Modern Art," plus five tracks from his January 1956 appearance on Joe Morello's (ds) album.
However, despite being produced by Pete Welding, this Blue Note album mistakenly includes an alternate take of "Diane's Dilemma" instead of the song "Blues Out."
Therefore, track D6 is "Diane's Dilemma (Alternate Take)." The listed "Blues Out" is incorrect.
