NBC Symphony Orchestra

The NBC Symphony Orchestra was a prestigious ensemble founded in 1937 by David Sarnoff, chairman of RCA, specifically for conductor Arturo Toscanini. Based in New York, the orchestra assembled top orchestral talent, including 21 former section leaders from other major orchestras, offering the highest salaries and a 52-week contract. Under the guidance of Artur Rodzinski, who trained the ensemble to exacting standards, the NBC Symphony Orchestra made its debut on Christmas Day 1937 and quickly earned recognition as one of the world's finest orchestras, celebrated for its precise and refined sound.

During its 17-year tenure under Toscanini, the orchestra produced numerous acclaimed recordings for RCA, sometimes credited as the RCA Victor Symphony. Notable projects included the complete recording of Richard Rodgers' Victory at Sea. The ensemble also collaborated with renowned conductors including Leopold Stokowski, who served as co-conductor from 1941 to 1944.

Following Toscanini's retirement in April 1954, NBC disbanded the orchestra. Most members subsequently regrouped as the Symphony of the Air, continuing the legacy until 1963.
