Gibson 1960's J-160E VS 2007
Description
Gibson 1960's J-160E VS 2007
In 1954, Gibson released the legendary "J-160E" based on the request to "produce a large volume of sound from an acoustic guitar." This electro-acoustic model is equipped with the "P-90" pickup used in electric guitars, and is famous for being favored by The Beatles' John Lennon and George Harrison, as well as Yuzu's Haruhito Kitagawa in Japan.
The model we have in stock this time is the "1960's J-160E" manufactured in 2007, weighing 3.25kg.
This model appears to have been produced in limited quantities, with a rare decal reading "Gibson Custom Shop Original" affixed to the back of the headstock. This decal appears to indicate that the guitar was custom-ordered and is in a separate category from series such as "Custom Shop Edition," and does not necessarily indicate that it was manufactured by the Custom Shop. The serial number on the label follows the regular lineup.
This guitar was apparently ordered with specifications nearly identical to the 1964 model J-160E, which is known to have been favored by John Lennon. It features a laminated spruce top, mahogany sides and back with a mahogany neck, and a rosewood fingerboard, with a 15-fret joint. The controls are simple: 1VOL and 1TONE. The neck has a well-proportioned C-shape with a reassuring thickness. The frets are slightly larger in size and may have been replaced or ordered with these specifications.
Like the original specifications, it features an adjustable bridge, and the plywood spruce top was adopted as a measure against feedback when connected to an amp, resulting in a percussive and clean sound. With its characteristic crisp and unique tone, it can be said to be ideal for rhythm guitar.
While the pickup gives it somewhat of an electric guitar atmosphere, the output is of course Gibson's characteristic acoustic sound. The output level close to unplugged sound is surprising. The tone when finger-picking is firm and has a pleasant quality that seems to cut through in band sound! The vintage sunburst color gives it both presence and character. This limited model, particularly popular with Beatles fans, has few units produced, and this one is a rare piece with a decal we haven't seen before, so we recommend purchasing it immediately if you've been looking for it!
