Design Records

Design Records was launched in 1957 as a budget subsidiary of Pickwick Sales Corp., entering the market with 24 initial releases announced in Billboard. All releases remained in mono format until 1965, with stereo versions available through sister label Stereo Spectrum Records beginning in October 1958.

Like many budget labels of its era, Design Records employed in-house staff to produce generic orchestral arrangements and compilations. Notable among these contributors was Lou Reed, who appeared as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter on several mid-1960s Design compilations and albums.

The label's visual identity evolved over its lifespan, transitioning from early colored logos with white wording to pure black and white designs, and eventually to red designs by the mid-1960s. As the parent company expanded into Pickwick International, Inc. in the early 1960s, Design Records continued operations until 1970.
