Woody Herman And The Thundering Herd
American jazz ensemble and successor to Woody Herman's orchestra, formally established in September 1967. The Thundering Herd emerged from Woody Herman's practice of regularly reassembling and reconfiguring his orchestras throughout the 1940s and 1950s into different lineups, each known as a "herd." While the naming convention became less rigid in the 1960s, the term "Thundering Herd" was officially adopted following the ensemble's performance at the 1967 Monterey Jazz Festival. Their recording from this performance was released on Verve Records in 1968. The ensemble remained active in this form through the mid-1970s, continuing Woody Herman's legacy of dynamic, frequently rotating lineups driven by the musical and professional needs of its members.
