King Sunny Ade

Born September 22, 1946, in Oshogbo, Ondo State, Nigeria, Sunny Ade is a pioneering figure in Juju music. The son of a Methodist pastor and organist, Ade moved to Lagos in 1962 and initially joined Moses Olaiya's Rhythm Dandies in 1963. After Olaiya transitioned to theater, Ade formed the [b=Green Spots] in 1966, a ten-man ensemble that recorded with African Songs Ltd between 1967 and 1972.

In 1972, Ade renamed his group the [b=African Beats] and established Sunny Alade Records in 1974. By the late 1970s, the ensemble had grown to approximately twenty members and incorporated synthesizers, tenor guitars, and dancers into their live performances. The band recorded with reggae label Island Records between 1982 and 1984, gaining international exposure through tours across Europe and North America from the mid-1980s onward.

Known for lyrical versatility, Ade's compositions range from political commentary on Nigerian affairs to Yoruba proverbs, Christian messages, and celebratory praise songs for local soccer clubs. His career has earned him numerous titles including Master Guitarist, King, Minister of Enjoyment (M.O.E.), and Golden Mercury of Africa (G.M.A.).

Following the African Beats' dissolution, Ade formed subsequent groups including [b=Golden Mercury] and [b=The Way Forward]. In the early twenty-first century, he became head of the Nigerian musicians' union, dedicating considerable efforts to combating music piracy in Nigeria.
