Monty's Guitars UnderSpun PAF Humbucker Pickups Set
「Monty's Guitars」 is a high-end pickup brand originating from London, UK. Founder 「Matt Gleeson」 thoroughly analyzed vintage pickups and reconstructed the tone for modern players, delivering the highest performance regardless of genre. Each pickup is carefully hand-wound, and the lineup also includes wiring kits using premium parts and natural fretboard care wax.
MION, captivated by the high level of technical expertise—including rewinding and restoration of vintage pickups, which are said to be extremely rare in the world—will work to further promote and sell Monty's Guitars products as Japan's first authorized retailer to accept orders and officially sell Monty's Guitars pickups.
The 「UnderSpun PAF Humbucker」 set is a model that recreates the taste of the "magic of PAF" found in vintage Gibsons, with a different character from the standard 「PAF (Patent Applied For)」.
According to Monty's Guitars, historically speaking, "PAF" pickups are extremely varied. At the time, Gibson's pickup winding machines operated multiple units simultaneously, and each ran at different speeds. There are even anecdotes of someone suddenly stepping away to brew tea. Nevertheless, the number of windings was measured by "time" rather than "count," which is why some individual pickups have less copper wire.
Also, the instability of the equipment's power supply created large variations in output, and it is precisely because of this that the "magical PAF" was born by accident. Monty's Guitars, having seen many PAFs, believes this to be the case.
What Monty's Guitars discovered is that individualistic and attractive PAFs have lower output than average.
Such pickups are characterized by clear, bright tone with depth, and a sweet, non-aggressive midrange.
If Monty's Guitars' standard pickup is a "bright humbucker," then this 「UnderSpun PAF」 is like a thicker single-coil. Of course, the structure is a complete humbucker, but there is a hint of Fullerton in its character. This is a completely different character from standard PAFs, and the response to picking dynamics differs as well. Its charm lies in its soft, rounded attack.
In creating a pickup that reproduces this characteristic, Monty's Guitars did not simply reduce the number of windings, but carefully considered the winding method, coil offset, and magnet selection in the design. With fewer windings, the guitar's natural tone is more prominent, and chords resonate beautifully.
The parts used are the same as the standard PAF model. High-quality nickel silver hardware, butylate bobbins, 42-gauge plain enamel wire. The magnets are Alnico 5 for the neck and Alnico 4 for the bridge.
