Gibson ES-335 Pro Cherry 1980
Description
Gibson ES-335 Pro Cherry 1980
The Gibson ES-335 is the standard-bearer of semi-acoustic guitars, possessing both the traditional resonance of a hollow body and the sustain of a solid body, continuing to captivate many players. Since its release in 1958, it has established itself as a classic model beloved by countless guitarists.
The model we have in stock this time is a rare model manufactured for only three years from 1979 to 1981—the 1980 "ES-335 Pro". It features a Cherry color (CH), serial number "82670022", and weighs 3.89kg.
The "ES-335TD" of that era featured small block inlays and a trapeze tailpiece. In contrast, this model that debuted in 1979 features a maple body with a 3-piece maple neck with volute, dot inlays and a stop tailpiece—specifications that at first glance evoke the early ES-335. Additionally, some individual units have dot position marks placed even on the 1st fret. (The one we have in stock this time follows the standard configuration starting from the 3rd fret.)
The most distinctive feature of this model is the installation of open-type double black bobbin "Dirty Fingers" pickups. Known as one of the highest-output pickups in the lineup of that era, it symbolized the high-power trend from the late 1970s to the early 1980s. The one we have in stock this time has a Gibson genuine pickup with "PAT" engraving on the front, and the rear has been replaced with a DiMarzio humbucker. While the model number is unknown, it is a high-output type.
This model ended production in 1981 and has not been reissued since. From the late 1970s to the early 1980s was an era when musical trends changed rapidly, and equipment such as amplifiers and effects evolved at a rapid pace. It seems this model appeared due to the demand for more powerful sound during that time, but it disappeared in a short period.
Precisely because of this, many distinctive models that are rarely seen today were born during this era, and this "ES-335 PRO" is also a rare model born in a narrow window of time, short-lived as it was. It can be used as-is with a solid sound, or it could also be used as a so-called standard "ES-335" by installing your preferred pickups. The fact that it has a genuinely 1980s sound quality suggests to us that the guitar body itself was born in this era. We would very much like you to hold it in your hands.
