Epiphone Olympic Cherry 1967 #000134
Description
Epiphone Olympic Cherry 1967 #000134
The Epiphone "Olympic" debuted in 1960 and underwent several design changes before Epiphone production in Kalamazoo, Michigan ended in 1969. From 1960 to 1962, it had an appearance very similar to the "Gibson Les Paul Special Double Cut," but in 1963, Epiphone changed the design to a style shared with other solid-body guitars such as the "Coronet" and "Wilshire."
The "Olympic" that arrived this time is from 1967 manufacturing, with a weight of 2.44kg. The color is Cherry.
This was an era when the "Coronet" and this model shared the same body but were given different names due to differing parts specifications. Mahogany body, mahogany neck joined with a set neck. Rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays, 24.75" scale, 42.8mm nut width adopted.
The headstock design is not a 3x3 peg arrangement but a 6-in-a-row arrangement from 1965 onwards, batwing type. A masculine design with only a single-coil pickup, controls are volume and tone.
The original Maestro Vibrola and wraparound bridge were missing, so only a new "MONTREUX / Compensated Tailpiece Nickel 8918" has been installed. The pots are from 1967 manufacturing, and the pickup is original. Since the capacitor was missing, we installed a new one here.
We replaced the nut and refretted it here, finishing it in the best play condition. When you actually run it through a large amp, you can hear the supreme treble-rich clean tone that only a rear single-pickup can produce, and the best drive. I can't explain well in words why the tone is so good, but it feels like the unique dry woody acoustic tone often seen in vintage Gibson guitars is coming straight out of the amp. It appears that Gibson and Epiphone of this era were not very different in price, and both seem to have been made with the same quality.
It has weather checking throughout, and the scratches look cool too. If a guitar vocalist used this, it would be incredibly cool. There are various uses for it, but regardless, the tone is so good that I want someone who plays hard to use it. At this price, can you get a real 1960s vintage sound anywhere other than from Melody Maker or this Olympic?
