Preston Thompson OM-MA (Adirondack Spruce) #1575
Description
Preston Thompson OM-MA (Adirondack Spruce) #1575
「Preston Thompson」is a veteran luthier who gained attention in the 1980s when bluegrass masters such as Peter Rowan favored his instruments.
He honed his craft at the "Old Time Pickin' Parlor," run by Randy Wood, a legendary Nashville luthier, and began crafting his own guitars based on vintage instruments. In 2012, he established his workshop in Sisters, Oregon, and launched the production of "Preston Thompson Guitar," gaining renewed attention in the authentic American bluegrass scene, including use by bluegrass master Tim May.
The model we have in stock is the "OM-MA Adirondack Spruce" from 2019, adopting a traditional OM-18 style. The serial number is "1575".
It features an Adirondack Spruce top, Honduras Mahogany sides and back, and a Mahogany neck. The fingerboard and bridge are Ebony, with Waverly pegs, 44.5mm nut, 645mm scale, and scalloped X-bracing specifications.
While the appearance and internal structure follow Martin's pre-war style throughout, this model incorporates Thompson's unique arrangements, such as a body slightly thicker than typical OM guitars. The tone has a quick attack and felt like a high-quality OM.
The body features a lacquer gloss finish and the neck a satin finish, with a somewhat thin soft V shape. The string action is low and easy to play, offering stress-free playability. Combined with the richness of mahogany and spruce, it produces a unique, rich sound. With sufficient volume in acoustic output, this is definitely a recommendable first Thompson guitar.
